I figured you’d take the news about your father worse.

When she pulled away she said, I’m sorry. I don’t know what came over me.

I was scared to Heaven but something in me was anxious too. I knew Amos would be angered, and I knew I might be stoved up, but every time that horn went off and Thunder slatted its sails, I wanted it to be my turn more than ever.

You led the law here, and they was out for blood. You think you’re gonna buy that off?

Is he happy I finally caught hell for what I done?

vi.

Everyone looks like you down there, he said. Dark hair. Dark eyes.

I ain’t airing all business, he said. You heard plenty for a night.

Quit now! I said, shoving him off. I’m done. Second I turnt my back, he was on me again, and he had his hands round my neck.

The noise made me shudder but he put his other hand on my shoulder to hold me in place. Again, he said. He squeezed. Another shot went off.

I couldn’t say that it all felt holy but it was sure interesting.
